Design was focused on the third concept and cleaning up documents this week.
Concept 3
Concept 3 was our Cult Investigator game, but with two threats to the player: the cultists and the creature. The idea in this one is that the player would be playing the game normally, with cultists moving on their normal paths and whatnot, but when a certain amount of time passes, an event occurs. When this event resolves, the cult’s deity is summoned, and the player has to worry about another force when walking around the map.
Visual Design Document
The visual design document was created this week, and I would certainly say it is a work-in-progress more than anything. But while I’m not too proud of it, it does convey the main aspects of our game in one place, and serves as a decent palette for adding more features and explaining more mechanics in the future. Besides that, I plan to refine it by making it less text heavy and by getting better images to describe the main gameplay.
QA
QA this week went well, we heard an overwhelming positive experience from testers. Not without faults though, we still have room to make the gameplay run smooth, which is critical in a horror game that relies on a sense of immersion.
Testers seemed to still get a little confused while playing the game. Mainly this was due to some doors not opening, the creature being hard to understand and react to, and the A.I. of cultists getting caught on doors and ignoring the player. Additionally, testers want to see more detail in the cultists by having them be creepy or seeing them be something besides default Unreal Engine 4 characters.
Lastly, we asked what testers thought about enemies in the game. From the data, we can see that testers wanted primarily the cultists, with both being a close second. However, based on what the team discussed in the meeting at then end of this sprint, we want to do both as we feel the gameplay will be more balanced and scary, once we iterate on the creature.
Documents - Design Document
Combining Intent Statement, Context Summary, Narrative Summary and Design Risk Assessment in one place was one of the better ideas I had this sprint. When I really thought about it, it really made sense to put this all into one document that can really get the game experiences out there for others to see.
